Bringing proven state-of-the-art military technology to the commercial aviation aftermarket
Quickly pays for itself where aircraft operational limitations due to limited visibility are a common problem
AerAware is an advanced EFVS solution that enables pilots to "see" through low visibility conditions by presenting advanced imaging technology along with real-time aircraft primary flight systems data onto an Elbit Systems/Universal Avionics SkyLens™ Head Wearable Display (HWD). This groundbreaking EFVS advancement incorporates multispectral ClearVision™ camera imaging, along with 3D synthetic vision, to provide unprecedented pilot situational awareness when operating AerAware-equipped aircraft in instrument conditions. With AerAware, instrument-approach visual references are revealed significantly earlier to pilots than with natural, out-of-window viewing. This enables pilots to descend below published natural vision instrument approach minimums. AerAware even allows aircraft dispatch to and from airports when visibility is well below published natural vision instrument approach minimums.
The integration of EFVS into commercial aircraft is an innovative and transformative technology developed and deployed after thorough safety testing to advance commercial aviation safety and operational efficiencies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has identified EFVS as one of the objectives of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) improvements, the FAA-led modernization of America's air transportation system to make flying even safer, more efficient, and more predictable.
AerAware includes a ClearVision™ multi-spectral camera, SkyLens™ HWD and other system components manufactured by Universal Avionics, a subsidiary of Israeli manufacturer Elbit Systems, and marketed by Universal Avionics as ClearVision™ EFVS.
Traditional HUDs restrict pilot viewing to a stationary head-forward view of the flight deck’s primary data displays. AerAware has the added benefits of SkyLens™’ Head Wearable Display (HWD) to not only provide pilots with significantly enhanced situational awareness but to also provide full visual mobility of primary flight data combined with augmented wide-field, “eyes out” viewing of enhanced 3D synthetic terrain.
Having successfully integrated this originally developed military technology on one of our commercial Boeing 737 NG portfolio aircraft, we are currently nearing completion of AerAware’s initial flight test program. The FAA has assigned Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) project number ST16454AT-T for AerAware, indicating the agency’s acceptance of AerSale’s STC application and the commencement of the STC certification process.
To accomplish prototype AerAware modification, AerSale performed the integration of Universal Avionics’ ClearVision™ suite, including radome modification to accommodate the EVS-5000 camera installation, system wiring, connectors, and mounting hardware fabrication for equipment bay and flight deck installations.
AerSale will have Parts Manufacturing Approval (PMA) for the installation kit of AerAware.
When initial flight evaluation of AerAware is completed by AerSale, it will progress to FAA flight testing for approval of system use on commercial aircraft.
